Background
A client approached us for a quote on a large pipeline project. After consulting with the relevant Local Authority, we discovered that the project needed to be divided into multiple orders based on parish boundaries. Despite falling under a single local authority, the Council required separate plans for each parish. This presented a unique challenge, as we had not encountered this requirement before.

Fortunately, the client provided a shapefile of the project area, which became pivotal to streamlining the process. They opted to use our Portfolio Service, which allowed us to manage multiple plans within a single project seamlessly. Leveraging our team’s GIS expertise, we used QGIS — a powerful open-source GIS software — to automatically divide the pipeline route into individual shapefiles for each parish. These files were then uploaded into our system as separate plans, all managed centrally through our Portfolio Service.
We collaborated closely with the Local Authority to verify the parish breakdown, ensuring full compliance with their requirements. After receiving confirmation from both the council and the client, we proceeded to commission the necessary local authority searches along the entire pipeline route.
